The Republic of Sudan is situated in the Northeast of Africa. The Blue and White Niles meet in Khartoum (the Capital City) to form the world’s longest river, the Nile, that divides the country between east and west. The Arabs is the major ethnic group. On the 9th of July 2011 the country split in two, so the Christian ethnic group is now occupying mainly the new Republic of South Sudan. At the moment we have one community in Khartoum: Shajara and outreaching women promotion programs in Mayo and other parts of the outskirts of Khartoum.

KHARTOUM – Shajara

Feeding program

This area of the city is occupied by middle class Arabs and many internal displace people coming from the South of Sudan. These people come every day to our compound to attend the feeding program, the non formal kindergarten and the primary school program. They do not like sending their children to a catholic school, so since the separation between North and South Sudan, we have been forced to close the kindergarten and the primary school for lack of registrations. Even the small dispensary has lost its patients, so we are forced to invent new forms of apostolate.

Oratory and non formal school

There is a very small group of Arab ladies who asked to be helped to sew and they attend our workshop regularly. We have in mind to start English lessons for those few southerners, who are still in the area.

Oratory and kindergarten

This area of town is very populated and much poorer than the previous one. The Sisters live in the Catholic Parish compound and are involved in the Parish and in the promotion of women. They teach them computer skills and to make pasta they can sell to have a income to feed their family and send their children to school.

The future of our presence in the the Republic of Sudan is not yet clear but now that we are here we try hard to be sign and expression of God’s love for all, regardless of their religious belief.
